The Botswana Heavy Metal Generation
It is around midnight in September 2010, and 200 people have gathered at a metal festival in Gaborone City Hall, in the capital of Botswana. Wrust, one of sub Saharan Africa’s major metal bands, is on stage and the roars from singer Stux Daemon are bouncing between the concrete walls. Nobody has an answer to the question why, but it is a fact that Botswana, with its two million inhabitants, has one of the most vibrant and fast growing heavy metal scenes in Africa. A decade ago there was only one band, today there are more than ten. More people do play and listen to metal in the neighbouring South Africa of course, but the bands and audiences are almost exclusively white. Only in Botswana do guys like Stux buy a guitar on e-bay and start growling.MORE
